Last year there was the whole brooha about Tom Cruise stating he knows the history of psychiatry and that psychiatry is bad. I happen to disagree. My dad is a psychiatrist so perhaps I am biased. However, I have seen with the right doctor it can be very beneficial.
Although Mr. Cruise might not approve of my dad's profession, he would approve of how my dad treated one particular patient.
My dad had a patient many moons ago who was suffering from a case of depression. It was nothing gravely serious that required any drugs, but the patient still wanted my dad to prescribe him something to take away the pain. My dad, however, has never been the type of head shrinker to just willy nilly throw medication at a problem; the patient had to have no other option for him to do so.
So what did my dad tell him to do. Well, he told him to start exercising. No matter how little exercise it was, my dad instructed him to just get up and moving. First he prescribed one minute a day of walking.
'Come hell or high water,' he told his patient, 'get up off your duff and MOVE.'
It took some prodding but the patient finally got up off his bottom and started walking. One minute a day. No more, no less. And guess what. He did start to feel better.
After one week, he upped it to 5 minutes per day, then 10, and so on. Eventually the patient, with a little bit of counseling, greatly improved. He just needed to move his body.
It's been well-documented that one of the best cures for your garden variety sadness is good ol' fashioned exercise. Sure, there are biochemical reasons for this, but I think there is an additional explanation. When we exercise, we are gaining dominion over our bodies, over ourselves, over our problems. We are taking control of our lives, of our health, and this can only make us feel better. Whatever the reason, this stuff works.
To some of you I'm preaching to the choir here, so this is just a little reminder. To those who never considered exercise as therapy, do it and you will see the magic it has. Whenever you're feeling down in the dumps, make sure to get back on track with a good helping of exercise.
